Event Definitions
See the descriptions below to learn more about the events available in DC305. You can view and manage all of your DC305 event options using the ALTER9 : Events command. See ALTER9 : Events for more information.

The FRESH event records that an animal gave birth to one or more calves and started a new lactation. Prompts are given for calf results, calf ID numbers, and any other items designated through ALTER>Fresh even items. The next available number past the ID number of the last calf born is used as the default ID for the calf.

The OK event confirms an animal's current status. It can also be used to change a FRESH animal to OK/OPEN status. OK is usually entered during vet entry (VENTER).

The RECK event records that an animal has been rechecked and leaves the animal's record as is. RECK does not change an animal's reproduction status and keeps the animal on the vet list for the next vet check.

The HEAT event records that an animal had a heat and was not bred for the current cycle.

The BRED event records when an animal is bred using artificial insemination or mates with a bull. The command will prompt you for a Service Sire ID (or BULL). If the animal has already been declared pregnant, you are prompted to either exit or continue. Continuing will set the Vet Code (VC) to 7, indicating an abortion.

The PREG event records that an animal is pregnant. Pregnancy is usually entered through vet entry (VENTER). If it is a bull breeding or a correction to a different breeding date, use the PREV event instead.

The OPEN event records that an animal is not pregnant. If the animal was previously pregnant, use the ABORT event to capture the loss of the pregnancy. Usually, an animal is given an open status through the vet entry routine. If the animal previously had a reproductive status of pregnant and is now declared open, the ABORT event will be activated. You will be prompted for the date of the abortion or days since the abortion, and asked to assign a new reproductive code.

The PREV event records that an animal is pregnant from a previous or unknown breeding. It should also be used whenever the SIRC (Service Item Required Code) needs to be set during the pregnancy entry routine. You are shown a list of previous breeding dates and asked to choose the correct one, or to estimate a previous unobserved heat by entering the Days Carried Calf. If the animal has already been declared pregnant, you have the option of exiting or going to the ABORT routine and then entering the PREV event again.

The MOVE event records when an animal is moved to a different pen. The difference between using this event and just entering a new PEN is that the MOVE event will be displayed as a historical record on the CowCard, while ENTER PEN will not. If the designated pen is a bullpen, the BULLPEN event will also be entered into the animal's record along with this event.

The BULLPEN event records when an animal is moved from a standard pen to a bull pen. The date of the BULLPEN event may help in estimating the conception date for a pregnancy.

The DRY event records the end of a lactation when an animal is removed from milking to prepare for calving. A remark or a pen change can also be included. If the animal has not been declared pregnant, you are offered the option of exiting without changes or continuing.

The ABORT event records that an animal's pregnancy ended and resulted in a loss of the fetus. If the Days Carried Calf (DCC) is greater than 152 days, a new lactation is started. If the DCC is less than 152 days, the animal will remain in its current lactation. You will be prompted to enter the date of the abortion or the days since the abortion. If DCC is less than 152, you are asked to set the reproductive status.

The DNB event identifies an animal as "Do Not Breed" to keep it from all breeding activity. This event is also automatically added to heifer calves born as a twin or triplet to a bull (freemartin). In some cases, it sends a DNB status to DHIA, which removes the animal from certain reproductive statistics. If the animal is subsequently declared bred, pregnant, or dried, it will lose the DNB status.

The SOLD event records that an animal was sold and removed from the herd. SOLD events require that you enter a Disposal Code to capture the reason for the animal's departure. In accordance with DHIA specifications, the SOLD event prompts for a CAR code.

The DIED event records that an animal died and was removed from the herd.

The CHECK event adds an animal to the vet list to be evaluated by the veterinarian at the next vet check. Be sure to use CHECK to have an animal checked for pregnancy or illness. Do NOT use RECK, which does not necessarily add an animal to the vet list to be checked.

The CALFVACC event records a calf's brucellosis vaccination and is often used to assign a tag number to a calf. This event is designed to enter USDA numbers sequentially. The last USDA number is stored and incremented to be the default for the next calf. When you begin, you must enter the first vaccination tag number. Thereafter, you only need to enter the ID of the next calf in line, and the next USDA number will be entered by clicking OK.

The XID event records a change to the animal's ID number. A new, unique ID number is prompted for. The \ switch (e.g., XID\) will perform the ID change but will not display the event on the CowCard.

The CLOSEUP event records when a dry animal is moved to a special pen for observation and preparation for calving.

The CULTURE event records when an animal's milk is collected for testing. You can specify either a single quarter or all quarters.

The TBTEST event records when an animal is tested for tuberculosis.

The MEASURE event records an animal's height and/or weight.

The WEAN event records when a calf no longer receives milk for feedings.

The DEHORN event records when an animal's horns are removed.

The TEMP event records the animal's temperature.

The TRIM event records when an animal receives a hoof trim.

The BLSERUM event records when an animal's blood serum is tested.

The VACC event records a vaccination.

The TRANSFER event is a PULSE-only event added to recipient animals for embryo transfers.
